Following the release of the publication Robert Smithson: Art in Continual Movement<\/em> Alauda Publications<\/a> proudly presents the symposium Rethinking Robert Smithson<\/em> about the legacy of the artist Robert Smithson (1938\u20131973) and its relevance for contemporary artistic practices. In many ways, the artistic debates prevalent in the 1970s are recurring in our time: the relation between art and ecology, the position of the artist within a growing information and media society and the crisis of (neo)liberalism.
\nAlong the line of two thematic approaches related to Smithson\u2019s practice, Art and Ecology<\/span> and The Cinematic Condition<\/span>, topical concerns in artistic practice of the 1970s and today are reconsidered by internationally renowned theorists and artists.<\/p>\n

Book launch Robert Smithson: Art in Continual Movement
\nFriday 30 March 2012, at the symposium<\/span><\/p>\n

This book deals with the contemporary relevance of Robert Smithson\u2019s oeuvre. His seminal Land Art work Broken Circle\/Spiral Hill<\/em> (Emmen, The Netherlands, 1971) is treated as a case study which opens up to a number of topics, still relevant in contemporary art: \u2018Models of Spectatorship\u2019, \u2018Art and Ecology\u2019, \u2018Documentation\u2019, \u2018Museum, Media, Society\u2019 and \u2018The Cinematic\u2019. The theoretical part is being completed with \u2018A Living Archive\u2019, which brings together for the first time a complete selection of archival material related to the work \u2013 ranging from photographs, film scripts and drawings to original manuscripts and letters \u2013 spread over different archives in the Netherlands and the US.<\/p>\n
